Monument, Colorado USA

The beautiful Town of Monument, Colorado is centrally located, off of Interstate 25, about 20 miles north of Colorado Springs and about fifty miles south of Denver. Monument was incorporated June 2, 1879,  after many years of settlement by farming pioneers, mostly from Iowa.  It is named after the Monument Creek that rises north of Monument in adjacent Palmer Lake.

Monument, Colorado is located at an elevation of 7,000 feet above sea level. Average daily high temperatures in the summer reach 85 degrees Fahrenheit, while the average winter daily low temperature is 12 degrees Fahrenheit. Occasionally extreme temperatures do occur, with a highs in the upper 90′s possible in summer, and lows reaching -20 in winter. The record high and low temps recorded for Monument are 101 degrees and -32 degrees. However, high temps in the mid 90′s and low temps below -10 are not a frequent occurrence, happening only a few days a year. Monument receives 100 inches of snowfall per year on average, significantly more than that of Colorado Springs, 15 miles to the south. Snowfall usually first occurs in mid-October and last occurs in late April or early May, with March and April being the months with the highest average snowfall.

Very Local Attractions within 1 minute (on our property!)…

On our property:
-walk around our pond or below the dam on the east side. On other side of pond is brewery and library.
-horseshoe pits down by the pond and Tipi
-feed the ducks at the pond.
-shoot baskets at our hoop by the fire department.  North west side of parking lot.
-fire rings lit nightly in the summer.
-pool and hot tub. The hot tub is opened year-round.

Local attractions within 10 minutes

Here are some Very Local Attractions in the Monument Area, within 10 minutes of the hotel…

Sundance Mountain: just above the town of Palmer Lake, 3 miles west on highway 105. Go enjoy the star that is lit during holidays.  The town is also a charming with shops, ice cream, park and lake.

Monument: beyond the highway frontage, Monument is a cute town with galleries and spas.  Turn left out of driveway, take right at light, go 1 mile.

Santa Fe Trail: just past the Safeway and rail road tracks.  This trail is level and easy for family.  Hike or bike.

Black Forest: an area of woods and meadows just northeast of hotel.  Fox Run Regional Park has playgrounds, picnic tables, pond and is just east of Sundance on Stella Drive.

Castle Rock Outlet stores: about 15 minutes north. Tommy Hilfiger, Aeropostate, Kenneth Cole and others. Take I25 north.  Open Mon-Sat 10-8, Sunday 11-6.

Local attractions within a short drive..

Garden of the Gods: More beauty than the eye can understand, apx 20 minute drive from here.

Manitou Springs: About 25 minute drive, this tourist town dates back to the 1800’s, from here you can see the Cliff Dwelling, Cave of the winds, Ride the Cog Railway to the top of pikes Peak, visit the Cliff House, drink from the Natural mineral springs and visit old world shopping antique stores, glass blowers, and more than we can mention here, please allow at least one full day of your visit for the Manitou Springs.

Woodland Park: About 40 minutes from here, Woodland Park is another old historical site, they also host the Rocky Mountain Dinosaur Resource Center. Add the antique shops, and home style cooking, and a day will pass way too fast here, One the way up, take the Pikes Peak highway drive (in Season) and have a bite at over 14000 ft above sea level.

Cripple Creek: About 75 minute drive.on the way in you can see the most unique view of the Sangre De Cristo  Mountains, Tour the Molly Kathleen Mine, 1000 ft below ground level, Then into Cripple Creek, an old mining town dating back to the mid 1800’s, many of the old buildings are still standing, some of them have been converted to Casinos, the old Hospital, is now the Hotel St Nicholas, and yes it is very haunted, ask for room 13 if you dare. From here you can tour the Victor / Cripple Creek Gold Mine via train, visit old town Cripple creek, and more than you can see or do in two days.

There is so much to do in this area we can not begin to cover it here, but rest assured, our friendly staff will help you find what ever you wish to see and even print you out a map with step by step directions, From here most of Colorado’s prime resorts and tourists attractions are a day trip, but when you stay with us, the cost is much less and with our friendly knowledgeable staff, you will always be able to get to what you wish to see without hassle, and the food and entertainment in our very own Oakley’s Cafe and Bistro is unequaled.  Up here, we do things a little differently At the Sundance Monument Lodge.
